Wednesday Poem: The Life That I Have ~ Leo Marks

life-600x400

The Life That I Have

The life that I have
Is all that I have
And the life that I have
Is yours.

The love that I have
Of the life that I have
Is yours and yours and yours.

A sleep I shall have
A rest I shall have
Yet death will be but a pause.

For the peace of my years
In the long green grass
Will be yours and yours and yours.

  1. I think it was Violette Szabo who used this poem as her ID code in the second world war. The story was so moving that the poem has stayed with me. I never knew who wrote it though, until now.

    • You are correct Loretta. He originally wrote the poem for his girlfriend, Ruth Hambro, who was killed in an air crash in Canada It was also one of many poems he wrote for SOE. I’ve got his book, Between Silk and Cyanide, on my TBR list.
